Innovative Italian robotics: the Modena-Venice collaboration, selected among the projects of excellence of the UE

The HyFlexyBot project born from the partnership signed between the Venetian mechatronics company Automationware and the Modenese innovation hub Crit: an integrated solution that will improve and make more efficient the production and logistics of the food industry. The HyFlexyBot project is in the top ten of the Agrobofood-Horizon2020 community program and will be funded with 300 thousand euros.


Modena, May 18, 2021 – The innovative Italian robotics, developed on the Modena-Venice axis, has been awarded with a new important recognition by the UE.

The HyFlexyBot project was born from the partnership signed between the Venetian mechatronics company AutomationWare S.r.l. and the Modenese innovation hub CRIT S.r.l. The integrated solution (a modular robotic arm combined with an autonomous mobile robot) will improve and make more efficient the production and logistics of the food industry. For its highly innovative contents, the HyFlexyBot project was included among the best 10 projects of the Agrobofood-Horizon2020 community program, winning a loan of 300 thousand euros.


The HyFlexyBot project combines three different technological elements:

a modular robotic arm, composed of certified, intrinsically safe, robotic joints and optimized for handling boxes and palletizing with integrated detection of the applied force;

an autonomous mobile robot (AMR), capable of lifting and carrying loads up to 800 kg equipped with an innovative control platform and vision system based on Artificial Intelligence;

a robotic operating system (ROS) that will integrate all the required functionalities (cognition, perception, movement planning, control and management), based on open source tools.


The union of these elements will result in an innovative model of Autonomous Mobile Manipulation Robot (AMMR – Autonomous and mobile manipulation robot).


The HyFlexyBot project grants absolute safety and absence of contamination of products at every stage of work (production, transformation, packaging, storage and transport), a priority that in reference to the Covid-19 pandemic takes on an even more strategic role. The HyFlexyBot project aims to achieve a production and palletization completely free of contaminants: advanced automation can play a fundamental role in guaranteeing the quality and safety of food products, overcoming the problems related to the intervention of human operators in logistics in terms of picking, packaging and palletizing of products. A challenge that also concerns other industrial sectors such as the pharmaceutical one.

We are pleased to inform you that, following the expert evaluation and summarizing the final results of the agROBOfood Open Call Industrial Challenges, your Project Proposal “HyFlexyBot Flexible Robot “has been selected for funding.

“The proposal was presented with sufficient details. From the technical point of view, a standard application for packaging/palletizing in food industry is proposed using a new cobot based on the top of a mobile unit and integrated on ROS. The main novelty of the proposal is the easy reconfiguration and the cobot itself since it is unique on the market (25kg payload for collaborative robots). The business analysis was sufficiently presented, and the analysis was convincing. The socio-economic aspects were addressed as well. The team is well established and have the necessary expertise.

The proposal describes an autonomous mobile palletization system to be applied in food processing industry with special attention on non-contamination of food. The background is overall well explained. Impact and benefit are comprehensible. The system may be of additional interest, due to the current COVID-19 situation. Problems in the meet processing industry are named. The concept of providing an autonomous mobile platform plus a sophisticated robot arm appears as a good way of working in low structured environment.

The European Union has decided to grant a financial contribution for the implementation of agROBOfood through the Horizon 2020 Programme.
